Learn to Trad Climb

This class is aimed at climbers looking for an introduction to trad climbing skills, such as placing protection, assessing risk, and building anchors. The class will include the opportunity to place gear while on top rope, with feedback from an instructor. Climbers will not lead in this class.

Goals of the class:

  • Understand the different types of traditional climbing protection;

  • Understand how each type of protection works and how to place it;

  • Understand how to assess protection placement;

  • Understand how to assess rock quality/type for placement; 

  • Understand basic trad anchor fundamentals

Learn to Trad Climb is a full-day class offered at Chatfield Hollow in Connecticut. Transportation and gear will be provided, but please bring your own harness, shoes, and any trad gear you own and are interested in practicing with. Please pack water, lunch, and snacks! The class will meet at MetroRock Bushwick at 7am.

Pre-requisites: Ability to top rope and lead belay (students will be mock lead belaying others and they must be proficient in doing so); Comfortable climbing outdoors, experience with sport climbing outdoors is preferred; Understanding of the principles of leading (indoor or outdoor)

Non-Members: $265

Duration: Full day
